Welcome to Pleasant Ridge

New Kindergarten Student Orientation

To: Incoming Parents new to the Saline Area Schools
Re: May 10, 2012 Open House/Information Night at Harvest, Pleasant Ridge, and Woodland Meadows Elementary Schools

Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 6:30 PM, Harvest, Pleasant Ridge, and Woodland Meadows Elementary Schools will be hosting a parent open house/information night for families who have children entering Saline Area Schools beginning this September, 2012.

The focus of this evening is to meet the building principal and get an overview of how a school day looks and some basic policies and procedures at each building.

Please note, although the school will be open, this evening is not intended as a true open house where you will visit classrooms and meet teachers. Rather, we will walk you through a typical school day, lunch procedures, drop-off and pick-up loops, and other basic information. This evening is focused on parents whose only or oldest child is entering Kindergarten in the fall, however, parents whose children will be new to the Saline Area Schools may also wish to attend.

You should attend the session at the school which your child will be attending in the fall. This is important because the presentation at each building will be tailored to the polices and procedures at the individual locations.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the building principal at your school:

Saline Area Schools - Summer Learning Program with ThinkStretch

ThinkStretch is a partnership between Parents, Students and Teachers.

We hope that you will support your student this summer with the ThinkStretch Summer Learning Program. Research out of Johns Hopkins University is conclusive - all students lose up to 2.6 months of learning if they do not actively engage in summer learning activities. Saline Area Schools is making a commitment to "Stop Summer Brain Drain"!

Our students (and you!) have worked very hard this school year...please help us help you to keep the learning going! Saline Area Schools is making available a grade specific Summer Learning Workbook and a Parent Guide to Summer for only $10. The workbook meets national standards for learning outcomes by grade and is formatted in a concise and doable workbook. Each week, for 8 weeks, your student will read, complete a writing activity, practice math skills and enjoy a bonus activity.

ThinkStretch Summer Learning Program Online Ordering

At the beginning of the 2012/13 school year, your student will turn in the summer learning workbook to his/her new teacher. Students will receive a bronze medal for completing 4 lessons, a silver medal for 6 lessons and a gold medal for completing 8 lessons.

Parents are KEY to the summer learning program and without your partnership it is not possible. The PTA/PTO organizations at Harvest, Pleasant Ridge, Woodland Meadows, and Heritage are supporting this effort by teaming up to help coordinate orders, get the workbooks distributed and collect completed workbooks in the Fall. Together we are encouraging you to "Keep it simple but keep it going!"

Order are due by Friday, May 18, 2012

Workbooks will be delivered directly to students in all buildings near the end of the school year.

The 5 Einstein Aces

The Saline Area Schools Destination Imagination Team, "The 5 Einstein Aces", recently competed at The Destination Imagination State Level Competition at Central Michigan University and received the "Spirit of DI Award" for exceptional spirit, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  They were the only team out of 204 to receive the award.  They also placed first at the regional tournament. They are (from l-r) Ashlyn Stager (Pleasant Ridge), Jason Coleman (Heritage), Owen Pichla (Pleasant Ridge), Annie Liemohn (Pleasant Ridge), and Noah Socha (Pleasant Ridge).  As they progressed through their end of the year run, their slogan became "Never Give Up".  Great words of advice from a great team!
